Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any major honors show nears, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
