European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
