A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
